A great night of hockey

It was a great time. I've been a Leafs fan since I was four years old (I grew up in Toronto) so having to travel only 3 and 1/2 hours to see the game was awesome. I thought the Minnesota fans were classy (they put up with us Leaf fans shouting "Go, Leafs, Go" and the occasional "Go, Habs, Go." [I was sitting next to somebody from Montreal who was having fun ribbing us blue and white supporters with his wonderfully ironic sensibilities]. I especially want to give a shout out to one of the ushers. When we arrived (my daughter and I) about an hour early, an usher, upon seeing our blue and whites (my daughter was wearing a Mahovlich sweater; me a Keon) told us that we could descend from section 201 to ice level and watch the warm-ups. So we did and we we're right up against the plexiglass, seeing up close and personal all of our favorite Leafs: Franson, Clarkson, Kessel, JVR. My daughter said to me later, it was really cool to watch the warm-ups because you can really see how the players are a family. Clarkson was teasing Orr and JVR; Kulemin was teasing Kadri; Orr was gently chest bumping three different teammates into the boards, getting them fired up. It was great and Clarkson tossed a puck over the glass for a four-year old fan. The game itself! Wow. Even though my team lost, it was a low-scoring game that went into overtime and a shootout. The Leafs killed off a five-minute major (Kadri, who I like, had an awful game--9 minutes in penalties including the match penalty; he also took out Backstrom in the first period with an unnecessary elbow that eventually earned him a three-game suspension). Bernier was amazing in the pipes. But that Zach fella. He's a Leaf killer. As a matter of fact, he's a Canada killer. If not for Crosby in OT in 2010, Parise would be an American folk hero. I'm going to make this a yearly event. Whenever the Leafs come to St. Paul, I'm there. A great time. Only drag: getting out of the damn parking lot.
